Number one, you find a listing of all the businesses that have any connection at all to your products (specifically the ones you sell if possible). Now these businesses don’t have to sell the products that you do, nor do they even have to directly sell anything related to your subject, they just have to have a connection. Look in the phone directory for a complete listing in your local area. Still not sure of what you’re looking for? Think about where people use your product- bars, restaurants and country clubs are just a few of the places you can start! Another great place to take note of is a place where large multitudes of people come on a regular basis, such as grocery stores, gasoline pumps, ECT. Go where the people are if you want to influence the most people possible!
Number two, with your list in hand it is time to make the ‘rounds.’ This is where you will actually go door-to-door and ask the businesses if they would be willing to make a trade-off with you. They will allow you to post a flyer or two in their store’s windows or their bulletin board and you will list them on your website as an “affiliate.” This will open up a world of opportunity to you to work in your local market because it is a free way to advertise in places that you need to be at!
By affiliating yourself with these off-line businesses in this form you will essentially be gaining a partner. While you could try the traditional way of advertising in the newspaper, this will cost money and you aren’t guaranteed to affect anyone. Create a product that is unique to your business: Now this one sounds more difficult then it actually is. Most people hear the word ‘create’ or ‘invent’ and run the other way because it means thinking, developing and most of all money! While sure, all of the above will come into play, creating a new product really isn’t that hard and every product business should attempt to do this to some extent.
